Searching Cases by Name
MiCOURT Case Search is the public starting point for any Marquette County state-court case. A name search works best with the full name and a likely court in hand. Michigan's search screen requires a Last Name or Business entry. First name, middle name, and birth year stay optional. Common names can flood the results. Add whatever details you have. Apply the Marquette County court scope, case type, date, or status filters the interface offers. A partial match is not proof. The entry may simply share a name with the Marquette County person you want.
- Open MiCOURT Case Search or begin at the Marquette County Court Directory to choose the proper direct court scope.
- Enter Last Name or Business first. Add first name, middle name, or birth year only when known and appropriate for the Marquette County public search.
- Use the displayed court, case type, filing or disposition date range, status, or public-status filters to narrow the Marquette County results.
- Open a likely result and compare its Marquette County court identifier, case number, parties, filing date, case type, and event list before relying on it.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Text | Yes | The required Marquette County public name-search field; enter the narrowest known spelling. |
| First Name | Text | No | Use it to reduce common-name matches in a Marquette County case search. |
| Middle Name | Text | No | An additional Marquette County narrowing field when it is available. |
| Birth Year | Year | No | Shown in the Marquette County official use-case inventory; public visibility can vary by record rules. |
| Case Type or Status | Filter | No | Available controls vary by Marquette County court and public interface. |
Marquette County Case Search Court Scopes
Pick the Marquette County scope that fits the matter. The direct MiCOURT links are C25 for the Marquette County 25th Judicial Circuit Court, D96 for the Marquette County 96th District Court, and P52 for Marquette County Probate Court. These direct scopes cut out unrelated statewide results. The court identifier is in view from the start. When the right division is unclear, the Marquette County court directory helps sort it out.
Marquette County Circuit handles felony proceedings after bind-over, higher-value civil matters, domestic relations, appeals, injunctions, and writs. District Court takes misdemeanors, initial felony proceedings, civil infractions, traffic, small claims, and other limited-jurisdiction cases. Probate covers estates, guardianships, and related matters. Family and juvenile categories can carry special display limits. A city name alone is not a court scope. A city matter generally lands in whichever Marquette County court holds jurisdiction.
The official MiCOURT case-search documentation spells out the Marquette County fields, qualifiers, filters, and pagination the system uses.
The live public screen may show fewer fields than the technical reference lists.
Note: A Marquette County court scope narrows results, but it cannot expand records Michigan rules make nonpublic.
Marquette County Case Search Before City
Search by Marquette County court identifier before searching by city. The county lists no separate municipal court in its directory or city sources. A city citation can still produce a Marquette County case. The record generally sits in Marquette County District Court. Negaunee's parking material, for instance, describes unpaid matters escalating to the 96th District Court. The court code and case number answer routing best. A place name alone falls short.
Sort jurisdiction first. MiCOURT serves Marquette County Michigan trial-court records only. Federal criminal, civil, or bankruptcy dockets are not part of it.
Searching by Case Number
A known number is usually the fastest Marquette County case search. Michigan formats combine a year, a sequence, and a two-letter case type. On the Circuit side, an illustration is 2026-0000065937-CZ. Enter its year, number, and CZ code in the separate fields when the screen offers them. A District display can use 260730FD-FD. Copy each piece exactly from a Marquette County court document or a prior result. Never guess a code from a case title. If the number is incomplete, drop back to name search. Filter by the likely Marquette County court.
Marquette County Case Search Number First
Year, number, and type together make a number search more precise than a broad name search. The Marquette County public screen's number panel is built around those three pieces. Read a case number as an identifier, not a summary of the facts. It selects the correct Marquette County case. The entry list tells the rest. After the match, check the court name, parties, filed date, status, and dated events. That second look matters. A number can come from an old notice or a similarly named proceeding.
Fastest search path: Use the Marquette County court identifier and exact case number first, then use the name panel only when a number is unavailable or incomplete.
When older or unavailable Marquette County results block a search, the court clerk can confirm the proper request route. The public interface is only an informational layer. The Marquette County clerk keeps the official case history and file.
Marquette County Case Search Type Codes
Michigan type codes separate a Marquette County District case from a Circuit one. District examples include ST, CT, SM, CM, GC, and SC. Circuit examples include FH, FC, CZ, AR, and AV. Treat a code as a filter. It is not a full account of the case.
| Marquette Court | Illustrative Codes | Search Use |
|---|---|---|
| Marquette County 96th District Court | ST, CT, SM, CM, GC, SC | Confirm the D96 scope and use the type when narrowing a known category. |
| Marquette County 25th Judicial Circuit Court | FH, FC, CZ, AR, AV | Confirm the C25 scope, especially for a Circuit matter or appeal. |
| Marquette County 52nd Probate District | DE and other probate codes | Use the P52 scope and the official code list for the full category set. |
Use Michigan's official case-type code list for the full set.
Note: A Marquette County type code names a filing category, but the case history supplies the actual procedural context.
What a Case Search Returns
MCR 8.119 lets you pull a Marquette County public case history. You can search by case number or by party name. Expect the basics. The case number, filing date, parties, and attorneys normally appear. Brief dated entries run before and after judgment. That lets you follow the procedural history of the court docket. Such a MiCOURT result is useful for identifying a case and tracking where it stands. Documents, attachments, and protected fields may not appear. The result is not a full copy of the Marquette County clerk's official file.
| Case Number | The court identifier and formatted number used to match the case to the correct Marquette County division. |
|---|---|
| Style or Parties | The public case caption or party information permitted for display; protected names can be omitted. |
| Case Type | The court category and code that help distinguish criminal, civil, probate, traffic, or other matters. |
| Filed Date | The date the case was opened or filing was entered, not necessarily the date of every later event. |
| Status | A public status indicator. Read the dated event list because a status alone may not show all activity. |
| Case History | Brief dated entries forming the running record, also called a docket or register of actions. |
A filing entry is just a filing. It decides nothing, and a scheduled event is only a date, so ask the clerk about any public document the online case lookup does not show.
Marquette County Case Search Status Terms
Public status and open status are not the same thing. MiCOURT uses both labels. Neither label promises full visibility. A Marquette County case can be open while certain information stays redacted, or closed while financial, post-judgment, or other activity still continues. For real context, read the dated case history rather than trusting a single status word.
- Filed
- An item was received and entered into the case history. It does not prove a court ruling.
- Scheduled
- An event was placed on a court calendar. It does not establish an outcome.
- Disposed or closed
- A public status indicator that should be read with the latest entries, not treated as a complete account of all obligations.
- Public
- Available for public access under the governing rules, subject to redaction and category-specific restrictions.
- Nonpublic or redacted
- Limited by a statute, court rule, court order, or protected-information requirement.
Marquette County Case Search Result Limits
MiCOURT itself calls public case information informational, not the official record. Treat results accordingly. A Marquette County result can come back thin. The case may be older, sealed, filtered, or masked for protected information. Do not work around a restriction by hunting for alternate public interfaces. When something looks wrong, confirm the court, case number, and access rule with the clerk.
Simple settings hide valid cases. A narrow date range can bury a real result. So can a default filter or the wrong court. When the public controls allow it, clear the filter, expand the year, or try the formal case-type variant. A no-result reply is not a certified negative search.
One more caution. A public case-history entry can omit attachments, confidential material, protected personal data, or a later correction.
Statewide vs County Case Search
MiCOURT offers a statewide entry plus direct court scopes for Marquette County. Start statewide when the court is unknown. It also helps when the search covers more than one participating Michigan court. For a known court, use C25, D96, or P52. Court Display is a separate scheduling tool. It is not a case-search replacement.
| MiCOURT Statewide Entry | Marquette County Direct Court Scope |
|---|---|
| Starts across participating Michigan public case-search records. | Starts in C25, D96, or P52 for the known Marquette County court. |
| Useful when the likely court is uncertain. | Useful when a notice or case number identifies the county division. |
| May produce broader name results that need more filtering. | Helps compare the result with the proper local court identifier. |
| Does not replace a clerk-held official record. | Also remains an informational public display, not the official file. |
Marquette County Case Search or PACER
For a federal case arising in Marquette, use PACER rather than MiCOURT. Federal criminal, civil, and bankruptcy dockets are separate from a Marquette County state-court search. The PACER Case Locator is the starting point. From there, select the federal court docket. The Western District CM/ECF page identifies the filing and access system. PACER's fee rules are separate. A Marquette County address does not make a federal case searchable through the Michigan state-court case-history system.
Marquette County Case Search Clerk Fallback
Some Marquette County results need a human touch. Older, restricted, or conflicting results deserve the clerk's confirmation. Linda Talsma, the County Clerk, serves as clerk of the 25th Circuit Court and takes Circuit records calls at (906) 225-8330. The 96th District Court clerk handles District case histories at (906) 225-8235. Probate and Juvenile sits at (906) 225-8300. In person, use the courthouse clerk counter or the ground-floor law-library terminal. Bring the case number, court, and record sought.
Ask about inspection, copies, certification, delivery, and reproduction cost before authorizing a request. Delivery needs confirming too. No universal mail, email, fax, or drop-box procedure applies, so check with the clerk. County FOIA is for administrative records. It is not the ordinary route to a court case history, and a phone call suits a missing result, a location, a fee, or a modified setting.
Access and Restricted Cases
Michigan law starts from openness. Under MCR 8.119, trial-court records are open unless a statute, court rule, or court order makes them nonpublic, and the public case history is the clerk-maintained running record. MCR 1.109 adds protection for certain personal information, including identifiers and financial-account data. That changes what a docket shows. A Marquette County case search may display the public case history while withholding a document, attachment, address, date of birth, or other protected field.
MiCOURT excludes whole categories. The exclusions are broad. Juvenile and child-protective proceedings, adoption, guardianships, mental-health matters, name changes, personal-protection-order categories, and wills may not appear. Ask the clerk what rule controls a given record. State any legitimate interest or legal authority only as necessary, and use the court's process for redaction or confidential treatment.
MCR 1.109 is the Michigan rule on protected personal information and redaction in court filings.
